Longstone Barrow

Approximate position of the stone row. View from east (Scale 1m).

A single stone row measuring 9m long, which originally included three medium-sized stones situated on a gentle south west facing slope. Only two of the stones now survive and they are orientated north west to south east. Extensive views, including Hartland Point are available from the row which stands in the vicinity of several prominent hill top cairns and a stone row.

Notes: These stones were not found during a visit in May 2018.  However Jack Fuller of Exmoor National Park Authority did successfully find them at around the same time.  A second attempt to find this row will be made in 2019.

Interpretation

Category: Plausible. No doubts have been expressed regarding the prehistoric interpretation of this stone row.

Access Information

Car parking is available at SS 72444 40419. From here take the footpath north to SS 72311 42209. Turn left and follow the path to Woodbarrow Gate at SS 71648 42509. Enter Woodbarrow Hangings and follow the northern side of the wall past some very fine cairns to a gateway SS 70833 42583. From here head south west. Perhaps you will have more luck than I did.
