5. Did you know that….

The stone row in Great Britain with the tallest stones is the Devil’s Arrows at Boroughbridge in Yorkshire.

The tallest stone at the Devil’s Arrows stone row stands 6.9m high, whilst the shortest is still an impressive 5.51m.

    Sandy,

Here’s a Q that’s been bubbling under my mind, to what extent might a stone row curve before it has to be categorised as something other than a row?

    1. Thanks Miles, As you have guessed this is something that I have given some thought to. I think the degree of curve that is acceptable depends on the length of the row. 20 degrees or so is fine in a long row but less convincing in a short row. The three stones at Trehudreth Downs near to the row I have described as a setting. One should expect a setting of three stones to be straight, whilst none of the long ones are. The most sinuous is the Upper Erme which is also the longest. Hope that helps.

The tallest of the Devils Arrows is only exceeded in height by the solitary Rudstone Monument. Leland in the 1540s described 4 upright stones(?), A German traveller in 1584/5 observed five stones, one of which had fallen. (Walford J. 2007 YAJ 79 p.325) A recent geophysical survey revealed large pits near Stonehenge. A geophysical survey of this site might provide evidence in of the original extent of this monument.

    1. Thanks very much Roger. A geophysical survey would certainly improve our understanding of this site. It might even indicate that we are looking at the much truncated remains of a different type of site. I am sure one day the answer will be revealed.
